ESPN's Outside The Lines discusses the rise of deaths at triathlons
On October 20, ESPN's Outside the Lines (OTL) ran a story about the rise of deaths at triathlons. The story discussed how the majority of the deaths have occurred during the swim. Since 2007, 44 deaths have occurred during the swim, seven during the bike and one during the run.
The story OTL did shows that there isn't a concrete explaination for this increase or the causes. OTL noted a study that USAT did which said "there was no common thread among the swim deaths and that the ratio of fatalities to participaton was stable."
OTL discussed the rise in participation, the mass starts, the medical training, the certification of races, and much more.
The day before the story aired a triathlete died at the Pumpkin Man Triathlon in Nevada. The 59-year-old suffered a heart attack during the swim. It was the eighth death this year that occurred during a triathlon.
There is a lot of in-depth reporting, facts, analysis, and stories of those impacted. Way more than I can summarize here. Please take some time to read and/or watch the stories. Links below.
The video story that appeared on OTL can be found here. The in-depth story from ESPN's Bonnie D. Ford can be found here. It is worth the read.
