New stadium, new runs, old runs?
When the announcement came a few weeks ago that the Atlanta Braves will build a new stadium in Smyrna at the corner of 75/285 it was big news for Atlanta, Cobb County and Braves fans. So how does this effect the running community?
Every year the Turner Field area is the site of several runs. It is popular due to its ample parking and open areas. There is some type of run or event there almost every month. The Strong Legs Run that supports Children Healthcare of Atlanta is held in early November has been held there for many years. Most recently, the new Run or Dye 5K series was held there in August. The Hot Chocolate 5K/15K will be there in January. The Atlanta Half Marathon makes its finish there.
The City of Atlanta announced that once the Braves move to their new stadium after the 2016 season that Turner Field will be demolished. Mayor Kasim Reed said a new development will be put in its place. What that will be is not really known at this time.
The running community question becomes: once the new stadium is built and Turner Field torn down what happens to these events? Will they move to the new stadium? Will they go to Atlantic Station? Move to the Georgia Dome area? Will new events be held at the new stadium?
There a lot of questions now and not a lot of answers. Race directors for those events held in the Turner Field area will be faced with a lot of challenges.
